Lumbar Spine

What is the lumbar spine? The lumbar spine consists of five or six small bones called vertebrae, which are stacked on top of one another. Between each vertebra is a gel-like cushion called a disc, which absorbs pressure and keeps the vertebrae from grinding together. The bones of the lumbar spine form a protective path for the spinal cord, which transmits nerve signals throughout the body.
